Facts

Prisoners’ rights groups make a lot of noise, here are some facts:

  • Since the abolition of the death penalty in Britain the murder rate has doubled.
  • Academic studies support common sense, the deterrent effect of the death penalty is real and effective (source).
  • A decades old Home Office study admitted that 38 convicted killers released early had gone on to kill again. Last year a convicted killer was released early on licence, he committed two further murders on release.
  • Milly Dowler’s murderer the serial killer Levi Bellfield is using human rights legislation to sue the prison authorities for £30,000, if the death penalty was restored that would not happen (source).
  • Capital punishment would make sure society is protected from child murderers. By eliminating child killers, society is protected from the possibility of them being set free in the future. Mental health professionals are now coming to the view after decades of research that the worst paedophiles can never be rehabilitated.
  • It protects other prison inmates and guards from serial killers, killing again.
  • It costs on average £119,000 per prison place.
  • The latest published poll (August 2011) from Survation showed majority support for the death penalty. There has never been a majority for abolition. When pollsters asked about specific categories of murder – such as child murder – support is overwhelming.

It is time guilty killers feared losing their life, instead of the innocent fearing being killed. Time to restore the death penalty.
